Where to Eat?
Wondering what else to do or where to eat while you are here? While Niles is not necessarily a gourmet heaven, it is worth a trip here to soak up the ambiance of a one-sided railroad town. The California Nursery shipped plants from this train station, as well as the Western Pacific from a siding that cut through the nursery in 1910.
So when you visit the California Nursery Historical Park, you will also want to see Niles, the town that grew up next to the California Nursery Company. Niles is now a district of Fremont, but retains its small town feeling.
Sunset magazine ran an article on visiting Niles. Check out their article. Unfortunately The Vine is not in business.
They did not include driving around the Niles neighborhoods that were adjacent to the California Nursery Company and were here for a few years prior to the nursery. Check out all the fruit trees and old homes in the letter and number streets.
The Niles Silent Film Museum is a place not to be missed, so if you can pop in there for a quick peek at their museum and get a cup of coffee on the same block, that is a field trip worth having.
The last connection of the Transcontinental Railroad supposedly ended up here in Niles. However, after looking through the old newspapers, it was actually somewhere near Livermore that was the true last spike. If you are a train buff, ask me about this.

Suggestions for what you may need
- Devout coffee - great cappuccinos, iced coffee.
- Ice Cream (serves Treat ice cream, Facebook)
- Broncho Billy pizza (online coupons) and a "slice" is good for two people. We always get the blazing saddle and split it. Ambiance is 1940's great. Sit at the counter or table.
- The Nile Cafe (sandwiches, soup, salad). I frequently fuel up here, because the owners are so nice.
- Joe's Corner - We suspect, but have not proven, that this was once a place to buy illegal alcohol during the Prohibition.
- Federico's - recommended by garden volunteer.
- Skilletz (Facebook) recommended by other gardeners.
