The Historic Display Garden

First windmill, located about where the cactus garden is now.
Visitors were entertained here and in the Old Adobe garden.
Spring flowering bulbs, rhizomes, corms, tubers, etc. drew thousands of people.
During the remainder of the year, roses and shrubs were planted.
The Display Garden was created sometime in the 1930's, around the same time as the retail center.

It was filled with flowering bulbs during the spring and with roses and shrubs in the summer and fall.

The beds have been nibbled away over the years, but are basically the same form. The yellow windmill is the second or third windmill. The Friends of Heirloom Flowers rebuilt it from scratch in the 1990's. The mayor's window is available for photo opportunities on special occasions. The windmill now stands where a flowering cherry once stood.

Today the Friends of the California Nursery Historical Park take care of all the gardens around the nursery office. Of course, the City of Fremont, does, too.

Last year, the park celebrated the 100th year since the purchase of the nursery by George Roeding.

The volunteers created an outside exhibit for the 'Peace' rose to go along with the inside exhibit.
The 'Peace' rose was introduced with fanfare in 1946, the year after WWII ended.  The California Nursery Company propagated the 'Peace' rose and introduced it in their catalog in 1946.

A commemorative Peace rose bed was planted last year and later was joined with 5 Peace rose descendants or sports - Garden Party, Chicago Peace, Love and Peace, Pink Peace, and Tropicana. We plan to add the 'Peace' parents, too.
